The Core muscles would include the External and Internal Obliques, Rectus
Abdominis, Transversus Abdominis, Iliospoas, Quadratus Lumborum and some
deeper muscles of the spine. The balance in the strength of these muscles
keep the pelvic region in balance. Of course, the erector muscles of
the back are very important too. Much of the imbalance in the back begins
with imbalance in the pelvic region. Some knee, ankle, shoulder and neck pain
can begin from in-balance in the pelvic region.
Most people work their abdominal muscles and they do not work their
Transversus Abdominis. The Transversus Abdominis muscle is the major
stabilizer of the lower back. Many things we do in our daily life depends on
this muscle to stabilize our low back so we don't get injured. When the
Tranversus Abdominis muscle is weak and not performing it's job it was
created to do, other muscles try to do it's job. This is one of the big reasons
for low back strain.
Have you been seeing people sitting on the big balls and standing on balance
boards or discs as they perform exercises? These are great techniques to
strengthen the CORE muscles and a fun way too.
Having core strength along with having your whole body toned will leave you
feeling strong and solid.  Core strength makes a person better at all sports at
any age.  Famous Athletes like Shaquille O'neal and Laird Hamilton are a few
of the many professional sport players that are great examples and speak of
Core strength.
Visualise  the core of an apple.  It's solid and it keeps the apple together.
That is our spine and the core muscles surrounding our torso, keeping
everything working together.

The top muscle on the left is a large muscle.  This is the Transverse
Abdominis Muscle
.  One of the Abdominal Muscles.  It wraps around the body
like a girdle. Women used to wear girdles to keep their waist line looking
small and in those corsets.  Men use belts at the gym to support their backs
when lifting heavy weights to do the job this muscle was made to do for the
body. This muscle is under the Obliques and Rectus Abdominal Muscles. At the
Gym you don't see this in the posters of muscles.  If this muscle does not get
toned, you won't get a flat belly (for the ladies pooch).
Remember it takes more calories to
feed and maintain muscle on the body than it does fat.  Having the transverse
muscle toned will make you burn more calories during the day in your normal
every day activity as well as all the other important core muscles being toned
as written to the left.
It makes your workouts more fun and you gain core strength while
strengthening the whole body. You  will burn more calories before and after
your work outs and you will burn more calories sustaining the muscles.
It's a win win!!
